Oway (short for Organic Way) is an Italian haircare and skincare brand known for its high-performance, plant-based formulas. The majority of its ingredients are cultivated on the brand’s own biodynamic farm, Ortofficina, allowing for direct oversight of growing practices and a significantly reduced environmental footprint. Most products are formulated with 90-95% botanical ingredients and packaged in recyclable, low-impact materials like glass and aluminum.

Certified vegan and cruelty-free, Oway has built a loyal following for its clean formulations and effective results. Oway is currently (at the time of writing) our joint top-rated brand in the Beauty & Personal Care category.

About Oway

Oway began in Bologna, Italy, in 1948 as a small family-run company dedicated to creating quality products. Over the decades, the company has evolved into a pioneer of sustainable beauty. In 2010, Oway established Ortofficina, its own biodynamic farm, to cultivate ‘zero-mile’ plants used in its formulations, and in 2013, the brand eliminated its plastic containers in favor of glass and aluminum. Today, they also create upcycled and tree-free papers derived from their agricultural waste.

The brand coined the term Agricosmetica® to describe its conscious approach, combining agriculture and cosmetics to create products that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

Rating Summary

Nature & Animals

Most of Oway’s formulas are derived from 90-95% botanical ingredients, some reaching 100%. The majority of these are grown on the brand’s own biodynamic farm. For ingredients that cannot be cultivated directly at Ortofficina—such as Sicilian citrus—Oway sources from carefully selected local or Italian biodynamic, and organic suppliers. Newer product lines reflect the brand’s commitment to local sourcing and any exotic raw materials previously sourced from Fair Trade suppliers are being replaced with ingredients from the Mediterranean basin. The brand also uses agro-food byproducts like fermented rice water, flax seeds, grapefruit and lemon seeds, and grape peels. Any palm oil used is RSPO-certified. The active plant-based ingredients are extracted using natural methods such as cold water maceration and pressing. All formulations are free from iodine, artificial colorants, propellants, SLS/SLES, petrolatum, parabens, PEG/PPG/BG, EDTAs, chemical solvents, synthetic fragrances, and genetically modified ingredients. Oway’s biodynamic farming and use of byproducts help minimize water consumption and waste, although the brand does not currently disclose formal tracking of water use or water waste. Its biodynamic and organic formulations and cultivation practices also mean the brand has an inherently low chemical footprint. Products are housed in glass bottles and aluminum tubes sealed with metal caps and labeled with FSC-certified recycled paper. Minimal plastic is used for the spray and dispenser caps and they have recently introduced metal dispensers. Outer packaging materials include recycled PEFC-certified wood pots, regenerated cotton bags, and upcycled or tree-free papers derived from the brand’s own agricultural waste. Orders ship plastic-free, using recycled structured cardboard padding produced in-house. Additional waste-reduction efforts during production include replacing disposable absorbent paper with reusable alternatives and using a 33% thinner plastic film for pallet wrapping. However, there are no disclosed targets or tracking data related to overall waste reduction. Oway is a certified carbon-neutral company, uses 100% renewable energy in its production processes, and holds ISO 14064 certification for greenhouse gas emissions verification. The company’s headquarters use LED lighting and smart energy management, and its administrative offices run entirely on solar power. Oway is a 100% vegan brand and certified cruelty-free by PETA.

Communities & Wellbeing

Oway’s headquarters employee contracts comply with and exceed Italy’s stringent labor regulations. Team members receive four weeks of paid vacation, full paid sick leave, generous parental leave, and health insurance benefits. Employees also receive a weekly delivery of organic produce grown on the company’s farm. Senior leadership reflects gender parity, with an equal balance of male and female board members. Oway has developed a vertically integrated supply chain centered around Ortofficina, its biodynamic farm, where most of its active ingredients are cultivated. Small and medium-sized enterprises certified by the company are each responsible for a designated plot of land, allowing for direct oversight of farming practices. For ingredients that cannot be grown in Italy, Oway works with fair trade–certified suppliers, though these are being replaced (as mentioned above). Oway also partners with Eta-Beta, a local social cooperative, to produce its home accessories. The brand’s products carry numerous certifications, including ECOCERT Cosmos, ISO 9001, and ISO 22716 (Good Manufacturing Practices for cosmetics). All formulations are free of any harmful ingredients and considered safe for people with gluten allergies and pregnant women. Those labeled “Nickel Tested” contain less than 1 ppm (1mg/kg) of nickel, the recommended tolerance threshold. Oway also maintains an adequate digital privacy policy to protect customer data.

Reviews & Testing From Our Team

Frequent Use Hair & Scalp Bath & Frequent Use Conditioner

After trying Oway's Frequent Use Hair & Scalp Bath paired with their Frequent Use Conditioner, I was impressed by their gentle yet effective cleansing properties. The subtle, natural scent—a blend of lemon, orange, grapefruit, and the surprisingly spicy yet pleasant underlying notes of pepper—is refreshing without being overpowering. While the shampoo doesn't produce much foam, it still cleanses thoroughly, leaving my hair feeling clean and hydrated. The conditioner complements it well, detangling and moisturizing without weighing down my very fine hair strands.

Glossy Nectar

Oway's Glossy Nectar has become a go-to in my post-shower routine. I like to apply it to my mid-lengths and ends while my hair is still damp, then let it all air dry. It adds a subtle, healthy-looking shine and even gives my hair a bit of natural lift and volume, without ever making it look greasy or weighed down. While I don’t struggle with frizz much, I love how it leaves hair soft, easy to comb, and super lightly scented, adding to the overall luxe but low-maintenance feel. Plus, a little goes a long way!
