10 Natural & Organic Baby Shampoos That Will Make Bath Time a Breeze

Dawn Cowles

What’s the best baby shampoo for some scrub-a-dub-dub cleaning fun?

Organic baby shampoo, of course!

Conventional shampoos—including those designed for babies—contain ingredients even rubber duckies would avoid: detergents (which can be toxic if swallowed or splashed in the eyes), phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and parabens.

Not to mention the other zillion ingredients ending in -eth, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, often found in tear-free baby shampoo.

If you were up with a fussy baby at 3 a.m. do you really want to whip out your magnifying glass and start researching formulas nobody can pronounce?

We didn’t think so.

Natural baby shampoo is the safest baby shampoo money can buy—and you can even pronounce the ingredients listed!

Lots of brands are recognizing the importance of making organic baby bath products, but let’s throw a quick reveal party for the top organic baby shampoo brands.

Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. Only The Best Non-Toxic Baby Shampoo For Bath Time

What is the best organic baby shampoo?

Considering you’ll find Earth Mama’s natural shampoo for babies in many hospital NICUs, it’s safe to say that’s some good ‘poo, filled with organic ingredients that are suitable for even the most fragile baby skin and immune systems.

Ethique’s natural baby shampoo and conditioner are as close to tear-free as you can get without chemicals. Plus, Ethique’s carbon offsetting and support of environmental charities will keep the planet tear-free, too.

Next up is Made Of’s organic foaming baby shampoo and baby wash that’s not just for babies. Everyone in the family will enjoy lots of suds and only natural plant-derived and organic ingredients.

Start at the roots and work your way to the end of the follicles to see how we scoured reviews and ingredient lists to come up with the best natural organic baby shampoos.

1. Earth Mama

*Note: Their baby friendly shampoo is vegan, but many products contain beeswax.

Earth Mama’s USDA Organic Baby Shampoo

Leave it to Earth Mama to produce the best organic shampoo for babies.

The organic lavender baby shampoo (which doubles as a baby body wash), is Castile-based, calming, and self-foaming sans SLS or synthetic surfactants—or triclosan, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and artificial fragrance.

Made with Oregon Tilth-certified organic herbs and oils, their organic baby shampoo and body wash ranks at the top of the list of safe shampoos for babies

It’s actually been the soap of choice for many hospital NICUs, and rated highest on EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database

We’re admittedly not thrilled about the plastic bottle, but we weren’t the unlucky person sliced by a glass nipple butter jar that was broken during transport.

That’s why they switched to BPA-free plastic. While we don’t love any type of plastic, we do appreciate a brand that listens to its customers.

About Earth Mama

Melinda is the Earth Mama behind the brand.

Between juggling kids, working as a nurse, and tending to her plants, she somehow found the time to create herbal alternatives to many of our toxic everyday products.

The Oregon brand wants to do what’s best for our planet, make use of nature’s pharmacy, and encourage mamas to support one another.

They proudly feature pregnant women as models and share information about the stigmatized postpartum depression.

As they say, Mom knows best, and we’re hopeful other brands will follow Earth Mama’s lead and adopt a more inclusive view of motherhood.

Most of their products are also Leaping Bunny-certified. Oregon Tilth is the brand’s organic certifier and their Non-GMO Project Verified certification is conducted by third-party technical administrator FoodChain ID.

Earth Mama Organics has also partnered with rePurpose Global to become Plastic Neutral Certified. Together, they calculate all the plastic used in Earth Mana’s products and operations and then fund the ethical recovery and processing of the same amount of plastic waste from the environment.

2. Ethique

Ethique’s Organic Non-Toxic Baby Shampoo

Want a zero-dirt zero waste baby?

Ethique is a plastic-free Certified B Corp that always impresses us, and the brand’s organic baby products category—“Little Ethique”—is no exception.

It includes a massage bar, natural baby shampoo and conditioner, and baby bottom balm.

Or do it all with the Tip-To-Tot multipurpose wash bar. It’s a moisturizing all-natural baby shampoo and body wash in one, thanks to gentle yet highly nourishing flaxseed oil, coconut oil and cocoa butter.

Mother Earth (and your baby) definitely won’t have tears in her eyes because all ingredients are mild, gentle, and pH-balanced ingredients for a baby’s introduction to wash-rinse-repeat.

That said, balancing pH is one of the best ways to get a tear-free organic baby shampoo (more on that later).

About Ethique

Ethique got its start in New Zealand, and now has a United States-based headquarters to meet the demands of their American customers with a penchant for reduced impact.

The company head office is run by independently verified 100% renewable electricity and beyond carbon-neutral, thanks to a 120% emissions offsetting policy through organizations like Ecologi.

In less than a decade, they’ve kept more than nine million single-use plastic bottles out of production!

Their carefully-selected ingredients make what’s contained in the compostable/recyclable boxes (like their zero waste shampoo and conditioner bars) even more special.

Everything is vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, plant-based, biodegradable, sustainably sourced, and free from anything that could cause health risks.

If you’re worried about the impact of the compostable cardboard box, don’t. They donate 20% of profits to conservation organizations that plant trees, among many other feel-good projects.

To further soothe your soul and the planet, one tree or mangrove is planted somewhere needed for every order made.

Also available on Amazon, Holland & Barrett (UK), and Nourished Life (AU)

Bubbsi’s Non-Toxic Baby Shampoo & Body Wash

If bath time feels like a chore and you struggle to get your little one excited about the experience, Bubbsi has the answer.

Meet the Bubbsi family, a collection of natural baby bath products and skincare that are bound to bring the giggles to your cleaning routines.

The formulas used in their skin and hair products contain COSMOS by Ecocert-certified organic coconut oil that’s cold-pressed to deliver natural hydration, and organic shea butter to gently clean and protect skin and hair.

If you’re looking for the cleanest baby shampoo, theirs contain small amounts of nontoxic and safe synthetic ingredients, used when there is no better natural alternative, such as the preservative that keeps products fresh and free from bacteria.

You’ll find none of the following: Parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances and dyes, harsh chemicals, potential carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, common natural irritants, allergens.

In fact, nearly 1400 ingredients banned in EU cosmetics are excluded, too.

One of the best organic baby shampoo and wash combos, it comes in a cute squeezable bottle made of food-grade silicone. This means it’s non-toxic, durable, and reusable over and over again. All you have to do is refill with a value pouch or bottle.

About Bubbsi

Bubbsi was born out of a desire to create truly clean and efficacious skincare products that can be fun and not too serious.

Sweta, the founder, launched Bubbsi following a lightbulb moment when using coconut oil to soothe her daughter’s eczema. She used that discovery to launch a range of organic coconut oil-based products for some of the most common skincare concerns—which you can browse by on their website.

Everything is vegan and cruelty-free, though we’re double checking on their ingredient sourcing ethics.

4. Made Of

*Note: It doesn’t appear as thought their baby shampoo contains palm oil derivatives, but we’re not certain about all products. We are confirming policies with this brand.

Made Of’s Organic Baby Shampoos

Suds and foam are what make bath time fun, but when it comes to many shampoo, natural options (meaning on SLS and other synthetic foaming agents) mean those satisfying suds are often missing.

Not so with Made Of’s foaming baby shampoo and body wash.

Okay, so it’s technically a handwash, but in reality, it’s an all-around organic baby wash that can be used on little toes as much as it can little fingers.

With Made Of, you can still enjoy foam and the comical faces you get to make with all those bubbles, without any fears of harmful chemicals. The shampoo and body wash comes as part of a bundle.

Also in the bundle is foaming hand soap and body lotion. All are made from plant-based ingredients that soothe rather than strip your baby’s delicate skin of its natural oils. This most natural baby shampoo and hand soap can be fragrance-free, lavender, or sweet orange scented.

With every product on the website, comes an in-depth explanation for each ingredient, which makes you feel more confident when choosing a product.

81% of the ingredients are organic and the other 19% are natural, including organic vegetable glycerin, organic aloe, coconut oil, and minimal essential oils.

They’re tested to ensure no soy, bleach, fungi, bacteria, or heavy metals are present in the finished formula.

About Made Of

Made of is a brand with a fearless commitment to organic standards, good manufacturing practices and rigorous independent testing. Ultimate transparency is the promise and that’s what you get with every product.

Learn about each ingredient, where the ingredient comes from, its NSF Organic Standard certification, and the site of manufacture (a USDA certified organic factory in western Montana for their soap), and there’s even the opportunity to review actual testing results.

Factories that produce the products are all in the USA and family-owned. They meet the highest standards in terms of working conditions, often have other sustainability measures. For example, their manufacturing site in New York is 100% wind powered.

All products are safe and made without GMOs, SLS, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, pesticides, BPA, and chlorine. Ingredients are at least 70% organic to the NSF Organic standards, and some products exceed that.

As a whole, the brand is certified cruelty-free, vegan, and USDA Biopreferred.

*Note: Green People is not palm oil free, but theirs is sourced ethically from regions that do not endanger orangutans.

Green People’s Non-Toxic Baby Shampoo

For a fun take on organic baby shampoo and conditioner, Green People offers theirs in two delightful scents: Berry Smoothie and Lavender Burst (or scent-free, if preferred).

The lavender shampoo is suited for regular use while the berry shampoo is ideal for straight hair.

Organic aloe vera juice is one of the foundation ingredients, which is especially suited to sensitive scalps and babies prone to dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema.

These vegan organic baby shampoos are cruelty-free, and free from SLS and the like (although not all Green People products are). There’s also an organic baby soap and shampoo combo with similar organic ingredients. The complete range includes some of the best organic shampoos for eczema.

About Green People

When Charlotte Vohtz’s young daughter started suffering from eczema and allergies, she started searching for a natural, healing alternative to shampoos made with almost exclusively synthetic ingredients.

Her search turned up empty, so she created her own company committed to organic products (sans synthetic ingredients or animal testing) that are healing for people with sensitive skin.

They’re a member of the Soil Association, who are committed to developing the first standards of organic beauty—meaning ‘natural’ products would finally have to contain more than just 1% natural ingredients.

Any palm oil used is from certified organic sources in the Philippines or Ecuador. Neither country is home to Orangutans, so the palm oil plantations are not putting the species in danger.

As for the other ingredients, they vary slightly but are 77% certified organic and some fair trade.

Their plant-based packaging is carbon-neutral and made from renewable sugar cane. It’s recyclable in the UK, but double-check with local centers before tossing it into your bin.

Green People also donates 10% of their profits to charity, and in the past have supported the Marine Conservation Society and other UK initiatives.

Babo Botanicals’ Natural & Organic Baby Shampoo & Body Wash

If safe shampooing is on your mind (and given you’re here, we’re assuming it is), you can jump right to Babo Botanicals’ EWG VERIFIED section on their website.

They have a few select products: Sensitive Baby Shampoo & Wash and Sensitive Newborn Foam Baby Wash, all of which are fragrance-free—because who needs to cover that wonderful natural baby smell (provided they have a clean eco-friendly diaper, that is)?

Both organic baby shampoo and wash options are made with mostly organic, easily-recognizable ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and chamomile, which come together as part of their certified organic Nutri-Soothe™ Herbal Blend.

Paediatrician-tested, they’re also free of many allergens, formaldehyde, and all of those dangerous three-letter acronyms nobody understands (MEA, DEA, TEA, and SLS).

However, they do contain palm oil derivatives, and we’re not certain what their sourcing policies for this are.

About Babo Botanicals

Babo Botanicals makes some of the most natural, gentle, and effective baby products that are natural on our planet, too.

Their vegan sunscreen is reef-safe, and everything—including their gentle organic baby shampoo and conditioner—is made on a certified organic farm in New York.

While these non-toxic baby shampoos are cruelty-free vegan, some Babo products do contain animal-derived ingredients like beeswax.

Committed to more than just a bottom line, they donate a portion of their proceeds to an urban farming program that educates children on health, gardening, the environment, and nutrition.

Hank’s Garden’s Organic Baby Shampoo & Body Wash

Using local, biodegradable ingredients, Hank’s Garden is able to create the safest, cleanest, and finest products for your family and home.

Technically, their aluminum bottled liquid and bar shampoos are separated into baby and adult formulas, but they’re sensitive skin friendly, they are suitable for everyone in the family.

Aromatherapy is at the heart of every product, and in the case of Hank’s Garden’s best natural baby shampoo and wash—the Harmony—lavender is the magic ingredient.

Alongside lavender, one of several 100% pure essential oils, there’s also organic jojoba oil which is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and helps to keep the scalp healthy and clean. It’s gentle and safe enough to be used as an organic shampoo for newborns and to treat cradle cap.

We should, however, point out that because this contains essentoal oil, it is not a no-tear formula, so take care not to get it in your baby’s eyes.

About Hank’s Garden

The ingredients and essential oils used in all the products are locally and ethically sourced, however, we’ll be reaching out for more specifics in the future.

To help reduce their carbon footprint, a deposit is offered on all reusable bottles and containers. Metal and glass bottles with pumps and sprays are available for refilling, or you can send your containers back.

By choosing to sell on Etsy, Hank’s products can be shopped on a renewable powered platform and shipped carbon-neutral.

Atlanta Body Culinary’s Natural Baby Shampoo

With Atlanta Body Culinary, you can expect a product that’s made to order which not only means custom and fresh, with less chance of waste.

California Bebe is the name of their best chemical-free baby shampoo and body wash. It contains only pure natural ingredients, such as Dr Bronner’s baby Castile soap, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and various other organic botanicals.

Baby-safe scents have been chosen to leave your bubs smelling fresh and these include vanilla, lavender, chamomile, and oatmeal.

About Atlanta Body Culinary

The owner of Atlanta Body Culinary’s Etsy store is vegan, animal-lover Celine and she loves making her products and adding her own twists.

She’s also a passionate label reader and encourages everyone else to become one.

Her advice?

“If you can’t pronounce it, there’s a big chance it’s dangerous.”

That’s why all of Atlanta Body Culinary’s personal care and beauty products for the whole family are entirely natural (10 ingredients or less!), vegan, and cruelty-free.

Plaine Products’ Organic Baby Shampoo

For new parents, safety is paramount.

And few things are safer than scrubbing those cute baby locks with the same thing you use: Plaine Products

This one-for-the-whole-family shampoo works especially well as organic baby shampoo because each ingredient is non-GMO, biodegradable, and checked against the Environmental Working Group’s database.

Instead of water being the main (and frankly, unnecessary) ingredient, theirs is scalp-soothing aloe barbadensis leaf juice, which makes for a hydrating, soothing, and more concentrated (read as: longer lasting) formula.

Choose between rosemary mint vanilla, citrus lavender, and unscented for those kitchen sink spa sessions.

About Plaine Products

Plaine Products are plain in all the best ways.

Minimalist for our planet without compromising on the quality of their eco-friendly hair products and body wash refills.

Just ask Forbes, Elle, Rolling Stone, Good Housekeeping, or any one of the other publications that have raved about Plaine.

Not only are they a candidate for the best organic baby shampoos, but for all-around organic shampoo for adults, too.

It comes in minimalist, aluminum bottles that can be returned and refilled endlessly, or recycled curbside if you decide to switch.

The one area they’re not so plain on is their certifications, holding those such as WBENC (women’s business enterprise), cruelty-free and vegan, and carbon-neutral.

Their products are made in the USA, they are a Certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet.

Plaine Products has been featured in an article on palm oil-free shampoo.

*Note: ecostore’s organic baby wash products contain RSPO-certified palm oil. While not a vegan company, the baby shampoos are vegan.

ecostore’s Natural Baby Shampoo

Looking to make parenting a little easier?

ecostore’s organic baby soap and shampoo is the soothing solution your baby needs for a good night’s sleep. With a touch of relaxing lavender and organic chamomile, it might also give you a good night’s sleep.

Their dermatologically-certified baby wash and shampoo soothes baby’s sensitive skin, without stripping away moisture.

A nod to the brand’s home, it also contains nourishing New Zealand harakeke, a type of green flax.

About ecostore

While initially founded by eco-village creators Malcolm and Melanie Rands (fitting background, right?), they’ve passed the reins to another owner.

ecostore continues to do an amazing job making products that are safer for us and kinder to the planet.

From zero waste dish soap to cruelty-free toothpaste, this brand does it all and does it well with top-notch plant and mineral-based formulations.

They’re guided by the precautionary principle, which means even if there’s a teeny tiny doubt about the safety of a certain ingredient, they avoid it.

They source ingredients sustainably and only choose those that are biodegradable, compatible with greywater systems, and mineral-based—never petrochemicals.

They are not palm oil free, but they source from fully traceable supply lines that lead back to RSPO-certified palm farms.

To the question as to why they don’t switch fully to coconut oil, they write:

“Some of our competitors have switched from palm oil to coconut oil, however, this is not a long-term solution as all viable plant‐based substitutes for palm oil including coconut have even greater environmental impacts, including higher contribution to global warming and significantly lower yield per square meter.”

Their factory is certified carbon zero and the bottles are made from sugarcane, which are 100% recyclable in most municipal facilities.

What About Tear-Free Organic Baby Shampoo?

You may have noticed that on this list of organic baby shampoo, “tear-free” wasn’t mentioned.

No need to cry, there’s more than meets the eye with this one…

While pH can be adjusted to minimize tears, more often it requires the addition of polyethoxylated surfactants, like cocamide MEA (something often excluded with natural shampoos).

Or even worse eye anesthetizing agents that are also found in pesticides to anesthetize insects.

Seriously.

All the tears in the world are better than an anesthetic that literally numbs your baby’s eyes and can cause organ toxicity. Just our opinion.

How We Found The Best Organic Shampoo For Baby

But which baby shampoo is good for babies? Or rather, what is the safest baby wash to use?

Ethical beauty might not sound like it has much to do with babies who are beautiful, just as they are (but then again, so are us adults!).

Still, not only is the best baby shampoo organic, but it also meets the rest of our ethical and sustainable beauty criteria used to make recommendations for everything from bath and beauty to organic lipstick, natural foundation, and zero waste mascara.

  • Non-toxic: This is what makes a baby shampoo organic. We ideally want to see natural skincare ingredients (like plant butter and essential oils), rather than one of the many ingredients to avoid in skincare that can get absorbed by your baby’s nubile, porous, and sensitive skin.
  • Vegan and cruelty-free: Though we occasionally make exceptions to consider ingredients like ethically sourced beeswax and honey.
  • Palm oil-free: If it is used, it’s only from organic or certified responsible sources
  • Ethical ingredient sourcing policies
  • Thoughtful packaging: At the very least, recyclable/recycled but the best organic baby bath products are zero waste (compostable cardboard or reusable aluminum and glass). While there were some plastic bottles on this list, we were thrilled to find refillable or non-bottle options.

Final Thoughts on Organic & Natural Baby Shampoo

Baby ‘s sensitive skin is soft and porous.

This is why natural and organic baby products are even more necessary than organic underwear is for us adults—but(t) that’s still pretty important, too.

As a new parent, it can be easy and, dare we say, enjoyable to make the switch to a safe natural baby shampoo.

However, don’t narrow your search to labels that only mention shampoo. Many of the products on our list serve multiple cleaning purposes. A generic natural baby wash can easily double up as a shampoo, saving you money and reducing waste.

With the likes of chamomile and lavender essential oils, bath time can in fact be a relaxing and fun experience for both shampooer and shampoo-ee.

More than anything, supporting one of these brands is a vote for a cleaner, safer future for you and your baby.

Wash-rinse-repeat this guide over to a friend or family member who could use a little advice on organic baby shampoo, tear-free.
