9 Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Gadgets Putting Mother Nature In Charge
In the modern world of constant connectivity, we may be losing connection with the one thing we can’t afford to: the Earth.
Thankfully, a rise in sustainable gadgets is making it so we don’t always have to choose between the two.
But what are eco-friendly gadgets?
There are a couple of different definitions. They might mean sustainable electronics made from ethically-sourced and circular materials. It mean solar-powered devices that reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Or it could be those that simpy help you live a more sustainable lifestyle.
They’ll ideally be all of these things, but given the tech sector still has a long way to go in the name of sustainability, not always.
Still, these pieces of tech can have a significant impact, like a phone charger made from renewable resources or a smart thermostat that helps you save energy.
We’ve compiled the best sustainable devices, so you don’t have to do any digging or compare any stats.
Everything we recommend to you on Sustainable Jungle is independently researched and we ask all brands to confirm their claims. To avoid waste, we test products on an as needed basis. How We Chose The Best Sustainable Devices
First, what is a sustainable device?
Sustainable technology follows two concepts: devices designed to mitigate or prevent environmental problems and technology produced with sustainability at the forefront of its design.
Past sustainable materials, we looked for eco gadgets and eco-friendly appliances that serve a purpose, like helping you save energy, reduce water usage, or compost food scraps.
And because sustainable gadgets are still a somewhat new realm, not everything we round satisfies all our ideal criteria, but these are the things we considered:
We chose devices made from eco-friendly materials, like recycled plastic and metal, ethically sourced wood, bioplastics, plant-based materials, and fair mined metals.
Because recyclability is such a major issue with technology, we want materials that are either biodegradable or with a majority of components that can be recycled into new devices.
The longer these precious materials can stay in use, the better, which is why we also seek brands designing timeless tech (so much as that’s possible in this fast-paced world, anyway). No more planned obsolescence, please!
Supply chain & labor practices:
Furthermore, we look for ethical business practices and payment of fair wages.
Good social practices, ethical sourcing, and manufacturing certifications are especially important in tech, where mining of the raw materials often means child labor and highly dangerous working conditions.
Carbon commitments & green practices:
If these eco-friendly gadgets are helping you reduce your carbon footprint at home, we hope the brands are trying to do the same for themselves.
This can mean use of renewable energy, carbon-offsetting initiatives, product recycling programs, planting trees, and resource recycling and conservation practices.
It’s also crucial that the devices are shipped in recyclable and eco-friendly materials.
Community & charitable giving:
Last but not least, brands that give back by supporting charities, non-profit organizations, or social and environmental causes are a great benefit.
Final Thoughts On Greener Gadgets
The future is now—and that means it’s time to invest in eco-friendly gadgets that don’t harm the environment, help you live a more sustainable life, and support fair business practices.
It’s tempting to purchase the latest devices to stay on top of trends and green innovations.
But being mindful of the devices you use, using what you already have, and selecting ethical brands is a small change that goes a long way.
