7 Laundry Detergent Sheets To Make Every Load Eco Friendly
Imagine this: grabbing your full laundry basket, tossing in your laundry, adding a laundry detergent sheet, and hitting “Start”.
No measuring. No liquid. No plastic bottle.
Convenience aside, what a way to take a bite out of the 900 million laundry jugs that hit the landfill in North America annually—only 30% of which are recycled.
It sounds too good to be true, so our sud-sequent question is this: do laundry detergent sheets work?
They quickly dissolve in water, tackle tough stains, and are suitable for all types of washing machines.
Kind Laundry’s laundry detergent sheet reviews will attest to that, they’re convenient, clean, easy to use, and work just like conventional laundry detergent.
The sheets themselves may be travel-friendly, but supporting brands like Tru Earth means a 94% reduction in transportation emissions.
And for every purchase of eco laundry detergent sheets from EcoRoots, a percentage of the sale goes towards supporting our oceans.
Spin cycle on down to the end of the article to see how we selected these brands.

About Kind Laundry’s Eco Laundry Detergent Sheets
We think less is more and Kind Laundry seems to agree with their eco laundry detergent sheets containing just five ingredients (or four, in the unscented version).
You can correctly assume this small list is free of artificial colors, optical brighteners, phosphates, parabens, phthalates, allergens, and dyes.
While vegan and cruelty free, the surfactant of choice—polyglycol ether—may be a derivative of palm oil.
The ingredients are all plant-derived and chosen to readily dissolve. They’re gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin and work in any type of washing machine.
Fragrance Free and Ocean Breeze Scent (derived from natural linalool) are available.

About SoJourner Sheets of Laundry Detergent
Good things do come in small packages—at least in the case of the sheets of laundry detergent from SoJourner.
The biodegradable soap is free of parabens, phosphates, dyes, and bleach.
They work in any standard washing machine and come in a recycled cardboard box.
As one of the most unique laundry detergent sheet brands, SoJourner is a Houston, Texas-based Etsy shop that specializes in…rave-ready hydration backpacks and fanny packs.
What does that have to do with laundry?
Nothing (we think), except that it goes to show any brand can strive to make little changes for the benefit of the environment.
Any order placed through Etsy is sent using carbon neutral shipping.
HOW TO USE LAUNDRY DETERGENT SHEETS
The best thing about these is that they’re so easy to use.
Just toss in with your laundry, set the cycle, and spin!
Though one small but unanimous piece of advice we can impart on you from reading many laundry detergent sheets reviews, is that you should put the laundry sheet at the bottom of the washing machine, not in between layers of clothes.
They work best from full exposure to water, in which case it’s less likely that residue will remain post-wash.
HOW WE FOUND ECO FRIENDLY LAUNDRY DETERGENT SHEETS
Which begs the question: what are the best laundry detergent sheets?
We selected the brands on this list based on the following criteria:
While the ingredients are “biodegradable”, that’s a bit of a misnomer (cough cough, greenwashing).
What is PVA? We did a deep dive to find out how sustainable this ingredient is.
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, PVOH, PVAL) is generally deemed a biodegradable polymer that’s used as a binding agent to keep the laundry detergent sheets together. Unfortunately, it’s a type of plastic.
While dissolvable (read: not the same as biodegradable), it needs very specific conditions, enzymes, and microorganisms to fully break down.
It’s estimated up to 75% of PVA doesn’t degrade in US wastewater treatment plants.
PVA—in the form of insidious microplastics—remains in wastewater as it’s treated, and is eventually either released into the environment or found in biosolids used for agricultural purposes.
Still, when you put the two side by side, PVA is a far better alternative than the giant jugs laundry detergent is usually found in. Strictly speaking they’re not a zero waste laundry detergent.
Laundry day would be so much worse if it involved harming animals. Fortunately, as these brands demonstrate, vegan laundry detergent sheets get the job done.
Similarly, we’re all for brands who test their products on their friends’ dirty socks—rather than on animals. Their coats don’t need washing in the same way ours do.
Cruelty free and vegan aren’t necessarily the same thing, so we like to double-check that brands tick both boxes.
It’s also important to see brands using ethical and sustainable practices that go beyond the product.
Whiter whites and more vibrant colors feel better when they’re associated with plastic free and carbon neutral shipping, local manufacturing, ethical workplaces, and charitable initiatives.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON ECO LAUNDRY DETERGENT SHEETS
Right now, laundry detergent sheets are all the rage.
And as the hottest trend in laundry (as funny as it sounds), they can only keep getting better.
While PVA isn’t 100% plastic-free or biodegradable, it’s a start. So try them out for yourself, then ask brands for even more environmentally-friendly polymer alternatives.
