The Best Organic Mattress Pads To Protect More Than Your Bed

What is the best organic mattress protector?

Ethical Bedding’s eco-friendly mattress protector certainly makes the list, being made from organically-grown eucalyptus that’s spun into fiber using only one non-toxic solvent that’s recaptured and recycled.

If you’re working from bed these days, coffee spill-proof your bed with an organic waterproof mattress protector from one of our favorite sleepytime Certified B Corps, Avocado.

Parachute’s cotton may not be organic, but its OEKO-TEX certification and carbon-neutral production ensures it’s one of the best non-toxic mattress protectors for you and the planet.

Head straight to the end of the article to see how and why we chose the top organic mattress toppers to top your bed (but we can’t help you with that tongue-twister unfortunately!).

About PlushBeds

Price Range: $65–$165

Their name says it all—PlushBeds is all about providing a comfortable night’s sleep, but doing so with sustainable and natural materials.

This sustainable bedding brand started out as a plushy purveyor of organic mattresses, but now offers a range of sleep essentials.

All three types of mattress protectors will fit normal and split sizes, from organic twin mattress protectors to California King.

Per our PlushBeds review on this very product we found there was zero crinkly stiffness that you’ll often find with mattress protectors, it doesn’t diminish the plushness of our mattress’ pillow top in any way. And it makes little to no noise!

PlushBeds’ Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Their best organic cotton mattress pad is the one actually made of Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. However, this Organic Mattress Protector also features a waterproof polyurethane underside.

Polyurethane is the safest and cleanest waterproof mattress protector barrier available on the market currently, and the PU here is free of VOCs, PVC, and harmful chemicals.

Their Cotton & Wool design features 100% natural cotton (note: not organic) and absorbent Shropshire wool with a waterproof recyclable microfiber lining and fitted skirt.

They also sell a fully non-toxic waterproof mattress protector, but this features a H2Pro™ liquid-proof membrane, but its polyester fabric construction doesn’t make us sleep easy.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Most products are made in their own California factory, but we’re not certain if the organic cotton mattress pads are included in that and will be reaching out inquire.

They have an impressive list of certifications under their pillow: GOLS, GOTS, USDA organic, GreenGuard Gold, OEKO-TEX, and more.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Partnering with TerraPass Carbon Neutral, PlushBeds offsets the emissions of their website. They are also a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and a Green America Certified Business.

The non-toxic mattress protectors come in biodegradable packaging made of hemp and corn film.

Community & charitable giving:

PlushBeds’ scholarships program provides a $1,000 scholarship to a winning student getting ready to embark on an environment-related college degree.

The non-toxic down mattress pad features RDS-certified down wrapped in a 100% cotton sateen shell.

The down alternative models swap in 100% hypoallergenic microfiber fill, though this synthetic material doesn’t appear to be recycled.

All mattress toppers are undyed and softened with eco-friendly fabric softeners free of silicon, formaldehyde, and toxins.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Parachute mostly partners with several family-owned factories in Portugal (aside from a few items made in the USA and non-toxic rugs made in India).

Their cotton is grown and processed in Turkey.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Between offering rug samples and experimenting with circular products, Parachute wants to reduce wasted resources.

Parachute is Climate Neutral-certified, prioritized circular products, and uses 80% recycled and recyclable shipping mailers.

They also feature DrySleep™ technology that blocks liquids but prevents sweating and clamminess.

Certified by MADE SAFE and GreenGuard, they’re free of questionable materials like phthalates, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), vinyl, PVC, and butane rubber.

About Coyuchi

Price Range: $65–$165

The word “Coyuchi” is based on the word “coyote” but you won’t hear any howling when you buy products from this slumber specialist.

They’re committed to respecting every part of the journey of their products—”from the soil our fibers are raised from, to our customers that welcome us into the most sacred parts of their lives”.

These trailblazers of sustainability were born in California, and they’ve used coastal inspiration for their products like mattress pads and toppers, including the Climate Beneficial organic wool mattress pad.

Coyuchi’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

If you want to transform your bed into a comfy retreat, the wool topper is the secret Coyuchi wants to share with us all.

Supply chain & labor practices:

The Climate Beneficial wool is sourced from two farms just 12 miles from the Coyuchi HQ.

About Happsy

Price Range: $65–$165

According to Happsy, we spend a third of our lives sleeping on a mattress—so why would we spend that time sleeping on petroleum?!

Unlike other companies, they aren’t okay with questionable toxic chemicals and flame retardants—which is why they created the first fully certified organic mattress.

In addition to The Mattress, they also have other slumber accessories—pillows, sheets, and some of the best organic mattress protectors around.

Happsy’s Ethical and Sustainability Practices

Materials:

The organic king mattress protector (down to size twin) is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey combined with a non-toxic waterproof barrier.

While this organic waterproof mattress pad’s barrier isn’t itself organic, they never use toxic chemicals or bleach and don’t treat their cotton with boric acid.

About Boll & Branch

Price Range: $65–$165

Shortly after the tragic Rana Plaza collapse, co-founders of Boll & Branch, Missy and Scott Tannen, decided to create and sell bedding they could be proud of.

Their products are made with safe and healthy materials by workers supported through an ethical supply chain and wages that go beyond the minimum threshold.

Their organic mattress protector—along with their Cloud Toppers for extra comfort—lives up to these standards and comes in three sizes: full, king, and California king.

Boll & Branch’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

The Mattress Protector is padded with antimicrobial Fair Trade and GOTS-certified organic cotton and filled with organic cotton fiberfill.

On top of that, it’s certified free of harmful substances, being certified by OEKO-TEX and Asthma & Allergy Friendly®.

Supply chain & labor practices:

If you want organic mattress pads made in the USA, Boll & Branch’s are produced in a Fair Trade certified factory using cotton grown in Turkey and milled in Portugal.

Speaking of fair trade, Boll & Branch was the first company in the linen industry to become Fair Trade Certified. From day one, they prioritized “a supply chain we’d gladly take home to our mothers”.

Since producing their first products in 2013, they have paid more than half a million dollars in additional wages.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Opting for boat shipping instead of air freight, B&B saves thousands of tons of carbon emissions every year—the equivalent of what 4,500 cars produce in a year!

They also use recycled and recyclable/compostable packaging materials and steer clear of toxic chemicals to produce their products.

Community & charitable giving:

Boll & Branch donates 10% of profits to charities like Habitat For Humanity, and their Helping from Home program has donated thousands of mattresses and organic pillows to in-need communities.

How We Found The Best Non-Toxic Mattress Protectors

How did we uncover the best organic mattress covers?

Did we toss and turn in a crinkly-sounding, plastic-y bed?

Well, no. That’s the point actually—we avoided plastic-based mattress protectors, same as we do with sustainable cushions, in favor of ones made with organic materials.

We referred to the following criteria covering supply chain, material, and business practice considerations to come up with a list of natural mattress protectors that won’t give us nightmares.

Materials:

When choosing a mattress protector, natural and non-toxic materials are non-negotiable.

Truly natural mattress protectors use mostly organic cotton or semi-synthetics like eucalyptus lyocell fabric.

While these brands have yet to find a fully organic waterproof mattress protector material that’s not polyurethane, we’re happy to see it used in a very minimal thin film (typically around 5%). PU is also far less toxic than PVC.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Falling asleep thinking about exploitation, forced labor, child labor, and unsafe working conditions is worse than tossing and turning on a crinkly mattress protector.

That’s why it was important for us to find brands with transparent and traceable supply chains. Most of them are able to share very specific details about where their products are made, by whom, and how workers are supported with safe and fair working conditions.

Manufacturing certifications can’t keep all the nightmares away, but they’re better than the average dreamcatcher.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Choosing an organic waterproof mattress protector is a great place to start, but it’s so good to see extra “green” practices like recycled and recyclable packaging, carbon offsets programs, localized supply chains, and other shipping and manufacturing practices that reduce emissions.

Community & charitable giving:

We love counting sheep and counting the many organizations these natural mattress protector brands support with a portion of their profits.

Final Thoughts On Organic & Natural Mattress Protectors

A good organic waterproof mattress protector is an easy way to protect your biggest natural sleep investment: your mattress.

An average mattress lasts less than ten years (though many of these brands back theirs for much longer).

Either way, one of the best things you can do from a sustainable slumber and low-waste living standpoint is to protect your mattress and give it as much longevity as possible.

With these organic mattress protector brands, you can protect yourself, your vegan mattress, and our planet with something that’s thoughtfully and naturally made.

And you can help them by passing this list along to friends—know any kids graduating to their first big kid bed and needing a twin organic mattress pad?
