How We Found The Best Ethical Suits
Avoiding fast fashion has become a 9-to-5 job in itself.
Thankfully, these ethical business suits are taking some of the workload off your plate.
But how did these brands ace our interview?
They met most or all of our sustainable fashion criteria.
Materials:
We prefer natural fiber suits because they’re biodegradable and can be grown organically. These include organic cotton, hemp, wool, linen, and ethically sourced wool or peace silk (or recycled deadstock if not specifically ethically sourced)
Semi-synthetics like modal and lyocell fabric are a second choice.
We suggest avoiding viscose because of the harsh chemical processing and non-closed loop process.
Recycled synthetics are better than virgin petrochemicals but still release microplastics when washed.
- Certifications: OEKO-TEX, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), bluesign®, Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Global Recycle Standard (GRS), Organic Content Standard (OCS)
Supply chain & labor practices:
We look for sustainable fashion brands with a transparent production system, ensuring living wages and fair working conditions via third-party manufacturing certifications and audits.
We avoid fashion industry brands known for greenwashing and spending more effort on appearances than results.
- Certifications: Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), B Corporation (B Corp), Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), Social Accountability International (SA8000), Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), fair trade
Carbon commitments & green practices:
Carbon offset programs, localized production, eco-friendly packaging, renewable energy, and regenerative agriculture help us get through the work week.
Brands that embrace circularity with take-back programs, recycling, or reselling are another benefit we consider.
Inclusivity:
No one wants to be uncomfortable in the office, so we look for versatile, diverse, and inclusive garments across many sizes.
Community & charitable giving:
Brands that give back are always employee of the month, whether through supporting women’s empowerment, environmental movements, or other social programs.
Final Thoughts On Sustainable Blazers & Suits
We can’t eliminate stuffy offices or annoying coworkers, but these sustainable pantsuits and blazers will help you feel your best while supporting the environment.
Remember, the easiest way to incorporate sustainable materials like recycled fabrics into your work week is to start slow (fashion) and purchase second hand suits.
Plus, if you’re waiting for payday or that long-awaited promotion, second hand stores are more affordable.
But there’s nothing quite like a well-fit custom suit and for that, these brands will keep you eco-empowered.
Share this list with your coworkers so they can put in their two weeks’ notice from the fast fashion industry rat race.
