How We Found The Best Sustainable Robes

Why buy organic bathrobes?

Well, do you really want plastic and chemicals in direct contact with your birthday suit or wrapped around you for one (or three) days in a row?

Yeah, us neither.

Sorry to turn “loom robe” into “gloom robe,” but did you know that formaldehyde, flame retardants, AZO dyes, and toxic softening agents make their way into most clothes—including our robes?

Not to mention the impact these chemicals have on our planet…

Sustainable and ethical fashion to the robe rescue with a more conscious way to stay cozy.

Materials:

Instead of GHG emissions and materials that involve intensive water and pesticide use, we stuck with organic fibers for these sustainable robes, like linen and organic cotton with an organic certification (like GOTS certified).

As mentioned earlier, organic linen robes are still only in our dreams, but some brands are getting pretty darn close by avoiding chemicals and sourcing directly from farmers for fair prices.

We’d also have no worries about wrapping up in organic hemp robes and organic bamboo robes (provided the bamboo fabric was manufactured in a closed-loop manner), but the fashion world is still waking up to these bathrobe-ready materials.

As always, it’s best to keep synthetics (like elastane and lycra) at a minimum and opt for non-toxic, AZO-free sustainable dyes.

Supply chain and labor practices:

A comfy organic waffle weave robe might keep us warm, but transparent manufacturing practices warm our hearts.

Seeing brands providing their artisans with fair pay, or ensuring safe, supportive, and ethical working conditions makes us feel less guilty about entire days spent in a cotton dressing gown.

Carbon commitments & green practices:

Our favorite lounge-ready eco-friendly practices included reusable and recyclable packaging materials, regenerative farming, water recycling, carbon offsetting, the reuse of textile waste, and traditional hand manufacturing techniques.

Inclusivity:

While there is room for improvement (literally) when it comes to getting closer to fully-inclusive ethical plus-size clothing, we were happy to find that, for the most part, a range of sizes was available—with diverse models to match.

Community & charitable giving:

It’s always an extra comfort when a robe comes with knowing that ecosystems, farming communities, and our global community are being supported in ways that go above and beyond what it is to be an ethical business.

Final Thoughts On Sustainable & Organic Bathrobes

Sorry in advance if your new organic cotton robe makes you want to call your boss, claim a “sick day,” and curl up for the next 24 hours.

But remember, a more eco alternative to even the best organic robes is the one already hanging in your closet—and then there’s always an online thrift store for some second-hand finds.

Otherwise, consider supporting one of these brands by choosing the best organic cotton knit robes that are also verry good for people + planet.

By doing so, you’ll not only feel justified in taking that sick day but you’ll also be casting a vote in support of a more sustainable fashion industry.
