As far as sustainable men’s clothing for the outdoors goes, few brands are better than Patagonia.

Their sustainable outdoor clothing includes ethical sweaters, technical outdoor jackets, vests, pants for hiking and climbing, swim trunks, hats, underwear, t-shirts, gloves, and bags of all shapes and sizes.

Despite that, they’ve kept their line limited for decades and focus on improving classic designs.

The Synchilla Snap-T fleece (with a rad retro 90s vibe) was one of their first designs and is still a bestseller.

Patagonia’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Not all garments are equally eco-friendly, but their most sustainable materials include organic non-GMO natural fibers like cotton, hemp, and linen.

Next are Patagonia’s recycled synthetics, like the 100% recycled polyester used in the Capilene line of activewear basics and baselayers.

All inks are PVC-free and phthalate-free, and you can shop their bluesign®-approved garments to ensure no toxic chemicals were used.

About Arms of Andes

Price Range: $$-$$$

Arms of Andes was founded five years ago by siblings Meli and Rensso Hinostroza in Peru. As Californians of Peruvian descent, they decided to “bridge the gap between the heritage of [their] ancestors and the modern world”.

And they make that a reality in their line of sustainable activewear made from Alpaca wool!

You can find super soft men’s base layers, mid layers, shirts, bottom layers, underwear, socks and more.

Arms of Andes’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Arms of Andes’ flagship material is their 100% alpaca wool fabric, one of the most sustainable fabrics and ethical wool options available.

Alpaca wool is 100% compostable and Arms of Andes sources from Alpaca herders where alpacas are raised in small, free-roaming herds in the Peruvian Andes.

About Boody

Price Range: $$

Bring things back to organic basics with Boody

Their ethical men’s underwear, t-shirts, tank tops, and bamboo socks may not come in a huge selection, but they come in every style you need.

One of the many sustainable Australian clothing brands, Boody quickly expanded to America following the rise of their ultra popular line of clothing.

Boody’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Boody loves bamboo, and while bamboo fabric is sometimes problematic, Boody thankfully isn’t among those greenwashing ethical clothing companies.

They use only FSC, Ecocert, and OEKO-TEX organically-grown bamboo made in a closed-loop system. The final fabric undergoes SGS testing to ensure there are no toxic chemicals present.

Their bamboo is often paired with a touch of spandex for added comfort.

Supply chain & labor practices:

It’s not sustainable men’s clothing made in Australia, but all manufacturing partners must have at least one certification from either ISO-14001, ISO-9001, or WRAP so we know they’ve been double-checked for their ethical practices.

Green business practices:

All clothing is shipped in recycled packaging materials printed with plant-based inks.

They’re also tackling the issue of textile waste with a clothing recycling program for customers.

Inclusivity:

Boody’s men’s clothing comes in S-XL sizes.

12. Kotn

13 Ethical & Sustainable Men’s Clothing Brands for Eco-Cool Comfort & Style Images by Kotn #sustainablemensclothing #sustainablemensclothingbrands #bestsustainablemensclothing #menssustainableclothing #ethicalmensclothing #ecofriendlymensclothing #sustainablejungle
Images by Kotn

About Kotn

Price Range: $-$$$

Kotn’s answer to the rampant ethical abuses within the fashion industry?

Ethically sourced Egyptian cotton.

And this Certified B Corp uses just that in its affordable sustainable men’s clothing, which includes flannel shirts, button-downs, sweatshirts, sweatpants, chinos, long johns, denim, work pants, and sustainable socks.

Kotn’s Ethical & Sustainability Practices

Materials:

Most of the world’s cotton usage consists of short fiber cotton, while Pima and Egyptian cotton are long fiber crops making more durable fabric of higher thread count (meaning it’s softer, too).

The premium cotton only comprise 10% of garments.

Kotn goes beyond this and uses Giza “white gold” cotton, the finest of all Egyptian cotton available.

While Kotn garments are all 100% Giza cotton, not all of it is organically grown yet but they are helping farmers transition to organic practices so that it eventually will be. Their first organic line will be launching soon.

Supply chain & labor practices:

Kotn is a direct trade company which operates by purchasing cotton directly from family-run farms at set prices. This way farmers aren’t impacted by the market value of cotton as it fluctuates.

All farms and factories are subject to regular third-party audits, which include interviews with the workers to ensure they are happy.

Green business practices:

Giza cotton can only be grown in the Nile Delta region south of Alexandria, so all entities are centralized within a 100km radius.

Giza cotton also has to be handpicked, as machines can stress and even damage its long, fine strands. Happy coincidence, though, as there are fewer machine emissions and more jobs created.

Inclusivity:

Kotn sizes tops XS-XXL and pants from 29/30 to 38/32.

Community & charitable giving:

Kotn collaborates with a local Egyptian NGO to end child labor by providing education for children from their cotton farming communities. The focus is on girls who traditionally have fewer educational opportunities in Egypt.

A portion of each sale goes toward building schools, buying books, and paying/training teachers.

How We Found The Best Sustainable Men’s Clothing Brands

While the men’s fashion industry isn’t as extensive as the women’s, it’s filled with just as many fast fashion pitfalls.

Around 85% of all textiles thrown away in the US end up in landfills. In 2017, that number was 13 million tonnes, with the average American individually producing 82 pounds of textile waste per year.

That’s a very large and messy man-cave of old clothes if you ask us!

It’s time to honestly reconsider our consumption patterns and learn to differentiate between sustainable mens clothing and other clothing brands.

That’s why we compiled a set of sustainable and ethical fashion criteria to answer the question: which men’s clothing brand is the most sustainable?

Materials:

Most of a garment’s impact comes from the material, so above all else, the best eco-friendly men’s clothing is made with eco-friendly materials.

Our top picks are natural materials (and ideally organic materials, hence our love for these men’s organic clothing brands) like organic cotton, hemp fabric, linen, TENCEL Lyocell, modal fabric, and ethical wool (ideally recycled wool).

Next in the sustainable fabric tier are recycled synthetics (i.e., recycled polyester and recycled nylon). While these aren’t compostable like natural materials, they avoid further plastic waste and give a second life to resources already in existence.

Pro tip: use a GuppyFriend when washing ethical boxers to sustainable jeans, to prevent microplastics from entering the waterway.

Fabrics to avoid are virgin synthetics, non-recycled leather, rayon fabric.

Supply chain & labor practices:

While material matters most in terms of carbon footprint, this category looks at ethical production practices that mitigate human rights issues.

Ideally, we want transparency and a demonstration of control and traceability to ensure all entities maintain fair labor practices and pay fair wages.

That often means looking for fair trade fashion brands that have third-party certifications, which help us to avoid greenwashing. But even B Corp greenwashing while rare, can still occur.

Green business practices:

Here we consider other ways a brand reduces its environmental impact like recycling production materials, textile waste considerations, carbon offsetting, renewable energy, garment recycling programs, and low waste/plastic-free packaging.

Inclusivity:

When we think of body image issues in fashion, we tend to think of women, but men are subject to the same misrepresentation and non-body-positive advertising.

We look for brands that offer sizes for everyone (plus-size and slim eco-friendly clothing for men alike ) and use inclusive models.

Community & charitable giving:

Not a “must” as some small brands simply don’t have the budget to be both sustainable and charitable.

However, those brands that give back by reaching out to improve the world beyond the scope of their own business dealings get a big sustainable fashion thumbs-up from us.

Final Thoughts On Ethical Men’s Clothing

We know that for some of you guys out there, shopping (even if it’s at an ethical online store) is at best, tolerated…

  2. There’s a new clothing brand based in Montreal, Canada called Manmade.

I looked at their products and website, and everything looks fantastic, but I noticed that their factories are in Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and China. They claim that the factories are “ethical”, but curious to know if that’s actually true. Would love to add them to this list if they are!
