PRODUCT & STOCK

Is there a warranty? Are they durable?

Unfortunately we don't have a warranty because shoes are subject to maximum wear and tear. However, from our experiences both our hemp and our soles have performed very well on our "torture" tests and we can confidently say that they are stronger than any branded sneakers in the same price range. We also tested over 10 types of different glues to find a perfect fit that would survive under the harshest conditions.

However, if for some accident or problem our shoes do not perform as expected, please contact us and we can deal with it and issue a replacement pair if necessary.

How do I clean 8000Kicks?

We do not recommend you to machine wash your 8000Kicks because it might remove some of the coating that protects the shoes from water, dirt and other stuff.

The best way to clean your Kicks is to use warm water and soap, and apply some gentle scrubbing.

Please note that although the coating might disappear or reduce its effect over time, the shoes will continue to be splash proof because we applied a membrane that keeps your feet dry no matter what. Be careful not to pierce this membrane while washing.

Is there a difference between the men and women's sizes?

Our shoes are made for everyone!

In order to facilitate everyone's decision we created unisex middle size. That means W9 is the same shoe as M8. In case of doubt between sizes, always size up.

I have wide feet. Can I fit in 8000Kicks?

Great question.

8000Kicks are standard width, at this time we are unable to offer wide sizes.

However, we actually follow the same size structure as Nike, Adidas and New Balance. Test one of their shoes in a local store and you can order the exact same size with 8000Kicks.

SUPPLY CHAIN & SUSTAINABILITY

Where are our shoes manufactured?

Our company's mission is to:

Portugal factory

Our Portugal hemp shoe factory was our first partner and it currently produces 35% of our total products. We started working with them from the beginning and it was with them that we developed our first prototype. It is a 4th generation factory with over 100 years and one of most renowned factories in Europe.

Why are we manufacturing in China?

- China is the #1 Hemp country in terms of variety, quality, quantity and price as well (While all other countries banned Hemp in the 60s and 70s, China started making it. Therefore China is decades ahead in Hemp textiles to the rest of the world)

- Long experience working with Hemp and Canvas materials

- High factory automation allowing us to manufacture at high quality standards

- Access to talented suppliers of shoe components.

Do we manufacture in China because it's cheaper?

- If we want cheap product we would rather move to Bangladesh or Cambodia where salaries are low. China was cheap 20 years ago, but not anymore.

- China has a trade war with the USA which means our margins are greatly reduced due to the extra taxes we have to pay to bring our shoes to US soil.

How do you make them waterproof?

Our shoes offer a 2 layer protection against water and liquids 💦

The first is a proprietary water repellent coating embedded in our hemp fibers that keeps, water, liquids and even dirt 💩 away from the shoes.

The second is a proprietary membrane that helps keep your feet dry, while allowing your feet to breathe 💨

Where do you buy your hemp from?

We source our hemp from many places, depending on what do we need and how much.

We buy it from Romania, Ukraine, Spain, France and specially from China, which is the #1 source of Hemp textiles.

If you have good hemp textiles and you want to work with us, hit us on mail@8000kicks.com.

How do you guarantee good working conditions?

Not only to guarantee good working conditions, but in order to ensure maximum quality we perform regular inspections to our factories and partners. Also we have representatives in each country where major production takes place to guarantee they meet our standards.

To know more about how we select our partners, check our code of conduct here. All subcontractors are held to the same standards as those outlined in our Code of Conduct. We have an high number of suppliers (over 100 suppliers needed to make our shoes), and we have 60% traceability of our entire supply chain, including the hemp suppliers, the most important shoe parts and where the shoes are made. We’re working on full traceability into the rest of our materials.

What is your carbon foot print?

The Carbon Footprint consists of the amount of CO2 sent to the atmosphere while manufacturing/doing something.

Let's see some examples:

4Kg of CO2 - Driving a car for 13 miles.

340Kg of CO2 - Economic flight ticket from LA to Austin

14Kg of CO2 - Manufacturing a pair of running shoes

What about 8000 Kicks?

Several parts are taken into account during this calculation such as raw materials, manufacturing and transportation. Each one is different but all of them equally important to deliver the best quality product and service. Although Hemp grows almost organically and it helps clean the soil and the air, unlike cotton or polyester, there is still a big amount of energy required to process the fiber.

Raw materials: 2.1 Kg of CO2

Manufacturing: 1.8Kg of CO2

Transportation: 0.2Kg of CO2

8000Kicks estimated carbon footprint for the explorer is 4.1 Kg of CO2

How do we reduce this?

We do this in two ways. The direct way is by working with our factory partners to increase the dependency on renewable energy sources. So far our Portuguese factory uses 45% to 55% and our China factory uses 30% to 40% of clean energy sources and improving.

The other way is by investing in capturing CO2 with hemp farms and the plantation of trees. Every newly planted tree removes an average of 50 kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere each year during its growth period of 20–50 years.

Hemp vs Cotton vs Polyester

One of the biggest KPIs when picking materials is the Carbon footprint. The Carbon Footprint consists of the amount of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere. Let's compare the 3 fibers:

Polyester - 9.52Kg of CO2 emissions per ton of spun fiber

Cotton - 5.90kg of CO2 emissions per ton of spun fiber

Hemp - 4.05Kg of CO2 emissions per ton of spun fiber

Just for you to have an idea, leather fits a whole new scale with almost 110kg of CO2 per m2 of leather, specially due to cattle farming. Crazy right?

But besides being a low emissions fiber, Hemp has other advantages:

- Requires no pesticides to grow

- Cleans the soils

- Absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere

- Requires 5 times less water than cotton

- Super strong and durable (even more than steel).

Is your fabric 100% hemp?

Although hemp is one of nature's most sustainable and natural durable fibers it also has some weaknesses like not being elastic, not being a a regular yarn and not allowing for a thin weaving. In order to improve durability and usability, the team often blends the Hemp fiber with others like organic cotton, recycled polyester, nylon, elastane etc.

Does that mean that your products are not hemp?

No, quite the opposite, All products sold by our brand have at least 55% hemp in their constitution. One example are the ankle socks that have Hemp (55%) and in order to make the fabric stretchy we also added polyester (40%) and Spandex (5%). All other products have a superior composition.

What you mean your outsoles are made with Algae?

Weed upper, and algae bottom.

Phenomenons like eutrophication can destroy entire marine ecosystems if not controlled.

We partnered up with Bloom Foam to create a super light algae bottom with increased durability while sponsoring the removal of harmful algae.

How to dispose of our shoes?

As of now, we don't have a process in place to take back customer's tired out shoes. However, our Innovation and Sustainability team is working tirelessly to have a recycling program up and running soon!

In the meantime, we advise you to take one of the following approaches:

- Donation - in case your hemp shoes are still usable, you can give them a second life by donating to someone in need. as part of our community aid efforts, quite often we make donations to the homeless population and other people in need.

- Clothing Recycling Depot - In many cities, there are old clothing collection points where you can drop off your kicks. There, they are split into parts for recycling, and upcycling.

- Trash - Our shoes have around 95% of natural components which means that they are almost entirely biodegradable.

Is the packaging sustainable?

We have created a sustainable packaging to carry our sustainable shoes.

1- Recycled cardboard. All our shoes, backpacks, wallets, hats and socks come in cardboard boxes that have been made using recycled cardboard, which allows us to close the circle in terms of sustainability

2- Corn starch mailer bags. all our products are shipped inside a corn starch mailer bag that is fully biodegradable and can be disposed by simply dropping them in the compost bin.

OTHER QUESTIONS

Can I smoke the shoes?

Do you really want to smoke our shoe? : -D

Hemp is the sober cousin of marijuana, which means that it has no psychoactive components, less than 0.3% THC, so you are definitely not getting high. Now seriously, please note that smoking the shoe is not a good idea and it might get you hospitalized.

Can I take this on a flight? Will police dogs come after me?

8000Kicks are 100% legal everywhere in the world. Our team has traveled to Italy, France, USA, Canada, Morocco, Portugal and many other countries without any issues. Hemp is the sober cousin of marijuana, which means that it has no psychoactive components, less than 0.3% THC, which means that this is definitely not a drug. In some countries it is illegal to cultivate hemp, but it is 100% legal to buy and sell finished hemp products like soap, paper and apparel as long as produced abroad.

Why 8000Kicks?

The first use of hemp fabric dates back to the year 8000 BC. So while we may think of hemp as trendy and new, it actually has a long history as one of the strongest and most versatile natural materials. We wanted to honor that heritage in our name.

In other words hemp is as old as agriculture, about 10,000 years old. That's a loooong time ago, right?

How did we came up with the idea of making cannabis shoes?

It's a blurry story.

It was 5am and our founder Bernardo was chilling with his friends in a friend's garage in Portugal. They were having a (wannabe) brainstorming session about new business ideas when someone came up with the idea of making a smokable shoe. Eventually the team has decided to embrace hemp as the material of choice to make sneakers because of its super strength, super resistant and ecological properties.

Although 8000Kicks is not for smoking, we still believe it would be cool to make a smokable shoe one day.
